Opera in two acts Livret de Felice Romani, from the libretto written by Eugène Scribe for Le Philtre (1831), comic opera by Daniel François Esprit Auber. Created May 12, 1832 at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan.

Donizetti's Elisir d'Amore is one of the most famous operas of the 19th century. An accessible and sparkling work, it is ideal for making its first steps in opera. Following a discontinuance in his programming, the director of the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan quickly needed an opera. Felice Romani wrote a booklet in a week (a faithful trail of a French opera-comic created eleven months earlier) and Gaetano Donizetti composed the music in just a month. Since its creation, the opera has inflamed Italy, soon Europe and even the New World. A major part of Donizetti's seventy-one operas, L'Elisir d'amore combines a light and witty intrigue with an irresistible score that depicts the traditional characters of the Italian commedia dell'arte, The coquette, the braggart soldier, and the charlatan. The timid Nemorino can no longer bear the humiliations which the beautiful Adina of whom he is in love inflicts. He thinks he has found the solution with an "elixir of love" which Dulcamara, the street vendor, has praised to him ... Where one discovers the unexpected virtues of a simple bottle of Bordeaux wine
