Claude Debussy: Fantasy for piano and orchestra, L.73 - Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony n.9 in E flat major op.70 - With Piano Marianna Shirinyan - Direction György Ráth.


Composed during his stay in Rome between October 1889 and April 1890, it is the only composition of Debussy for piano and orchestra. Debussy remained dissatisfied with this work which, in his eyes, evoked too closely the Symphony on a mountain song by Vincent d'Indy. He finally decided to disavow it and to prevent the first execution in 1890, he even went as far as stealing the orchestral material, not without having sent a word of excuse to the conductor. Debussy reworked the score several times, but never lifted the ban on playing or publishing this "Fantasy" during his lifetime. It was not created until 1919, one year after the death of the composer, in London with soloists Alfred Cortot, in Lyon, directed by André Messager, with Marguerite Long. It was the young Armenian pianist Marianna Shirinyan who gave this work its nobility. Written in less than a month, in 1945 in Leningrad, the Symphony n. 9 of Shostakovich, went down in history because of Stalin's anger at the time of his creation. Indeed, this work should have celebrated with great pomp the brilliant triumph of the Red Army over Germany but the irreverent writing, its short duration (half an hour) did not meet the requirements of the "little father of people" ...
