Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 - Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 9 in E flat major, Opus 70 - Piano Dmitry Masleev - Musical direction György G. Ráth.
The pianist Dmitri Masleev, already the first prize of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Prize in 2015, will perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3, probably one of the most masterly works in the repertoire written for this instrument. The Concerto remains a monument, an "icon", a formidable one because of its technicality, its twisting virtuosity, its breathtaking cadences and its lyricism worthy of the most beautiful opera pages.
Written in less than a month, in 1945 in Leningrad, the Symphony n. 9 of Shostakovich, goes down in history because of the wrath of Stalin when it was created.
Indeed, this work should have celebrated with great pomp the brilliant triumph of the Red Army over Germany but the irreverent writing, its short duration (half an hour) did not meet the demands of the "little father of the People"...
