D'Alfred de Musset - Director: Simon Eine, Honorary Member of the Comédie Française - With the Company: Théâtre de l'eau vive.
As he himself acknowledged, Musset is as much a part of Octave's character as that of Coelio. We have therefore constructed our staging and the actors' play on a superposition of the interpretation of the characters, so that each of the roles contains, in its own way, the presence of Musset. We have treated death, the driving thread of the play, as a luminous companion, and the assassination of Coelio, if it remains a reprehensible act of justice, renders all the excessiveness of the romantic ideal. The scene of Coelio with his mother, Hermia, is for us the keystone of this romantic drama. It determines the inevitable journey of Coeli, and, as in tragedy, the impossibility of escaping from his destiny. The lucidity of Musset and the revolt contained in his writings have led us not to choose a "classical" interpretation of this play by making joyful sadness and pleasures filled with despair. Octave is Celio, Coelio is Octavian, the ideal is a feast, and realism is a death of being. It is therefore from the depths of Musset's soul that we have constructed these "caprices" that carry freedom.
