Each year in Tourrette-Levens, a procession with lights takes place, known as "Proucession daï Limassa". Tradition has it that houses are illuminated with a multitude of snail shells filled with oil and a small wick.
This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. It was Pope Urban IV who decided in 1264 to celebrate with a special event the sacrament of the Eucharist. His successor John XXII endowed it with an octave like the great religious festivals and prescribed a procession of the Blessed Sacrament.
