Cent portraits pour un siècle

From 19 May 2021 To 22 November 2021
Palais Lascaris
In the 18th century, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture established the hierarchy of genres and placed the portrait, which was very much in vogue at the time, right after the historical subject.

Official artists created effigies of the reigning kings, Louis XV, Louis XVI, and the royal family, while various figures from the court, the city or the province, seeking social recognition, addressed more accessible portrait artists.

The paintings of the famous Van Loo, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Duplessis, Ducreux and many other artists that the Palais Lascaris presents, one hundred in total, all on loan from the Conservatoire du Portrait du XVIII° Siècle, thus depict the society of a century and come to offer the Nice public a superb demonstration of painting and the art of portraiture.

The exhibition previously presented at the Musée Lambinet in Versailles takes on a special flavour within this precious Baroque palace. The Lascaris Palace was in fact erected in the 17th century by the will of Jean-Paul Lascaris, Grand Master of the Order of Malta, for his nephew Jean Baptiste Lascaris, and was, from the mid 17th century to the end of the 18th century, the private residence of the aristocratic Lascaris Ventimiglia family. Situated in the heart of the city, between the ducal palace and the communal palace, the Lascaris Palace was the witness of sumptuous episodes linked to the history of the County of Nice.
