Founded in the 8th century, the Monastery of Cimiez is an iconic place to visit in Nice, consisting of a church and Franciscan museum. Notre Dame de l'Assomption church is one of the most magnificent. It houses three major works by artist Louis Bréa as well as a carved wood monumental altarpiece gilded with gold leaf. For its part, the museum has many frescoes and works of art which retrace Franciscan life in Nice since the 13th century.
Its magnificent façade and its entrance porch were subsequently added in the 19th century. A neo-Gothic architectural style which offered the monastery an exceptional magnitude. At its heart, a cloister nowadays hosts events and concerts, as well as some summer masses. The Monastery of Cimiez extends onto a magnificent garden and a cemetery where many personalities are buried, such as Henri Matisse. The monastery complex was registered as a Historic Monument in 1993 along with the old garden and the cemetery the following year.
